After a major stroke and carotid artery surgery, 62-year-old Neal Olin is working toward rehabilitation and the long road home to Brownwood. Your support can help carry Neal and Kathy through the months ahead.
This page is maintained by Neal’s family.
What happened
Some of you know that Neal has had a stroke in the past. On September 6, he suffered a much more serious stroke and was transported to a larger hospital. Doctors discovered a severely blocked carotid artery and successfully performed surgery on September 10.
Neal is beginning to regain movement in his left hand and leg and has grip strength, but he still has no feeling on that side. He cannot yet walk or functionally use his left hand. Our next goal is to bring him closer to home in Brownwood, Texas, where he can begin the long road to recovery at a rehabilitation center.
At 62, Neal has spent his life creating and working with his hands. He is an artist, painter, contractor, and musician who can work on almost anything. He is also the person his family calls for advice. Whether it is construction or a project we have never attempted, Dad always has an answer—or a way he would do it that ends up working. He is a husband, father, grandfather, and proud great-granddad.
Neal and his wife, Kathy, have been together for 38 years in Brownwood. Kathy suffered a stroke at the end of January 2026 and had only recently returned to work. She has remained by Neal’s side throughout his hospitalization away from home. After a year that has tested them both, they need room to focus on healing rather than travel, medical, and household expenses.
Every donation, share, prayer, and word of encouragement helps Neal and Kathy take the next step toward home and recovery.

The latest
Neal is improving and can now move his left hand and leg. He also has grip strength, which is encouraging. He still has no feeling on his left side and is not yet able to walk or use the hand beyond moving it.
Our goal now is to get him moved back near our hometown to a rehabilitation center so he can begin the long road to recovery close to home. We are grateful for every person helping us take that next step.
Doctors identified a severely blocked carotid artery as the underlying problem and successfully performed surgery. With the procedure behind him, our family turned its attention to Neal’s recovery, rehabilitation, and the work of getting him back home.
